Organizing and analyzing the complete chart: nursing notes, flowsheets, MAR, orders, labs, device and pump data, so nothing important is missed.

Medical chronologies and case summaries

A clear, cited timeline of what happened and when, written in plain language for the legal team.

Case merit screening

An early, honest look at whether the nursing care issues support the elements of a claim or a defense: duty, breach, causation and damages.

Nursing standard of care analysis

What a reasonably prudent critical care nurse would have done in the same situation, and where care met or fell short of that standard.

Causation and damages support

Linking clinical events to outcomes, identifying injuries and future care needs, and giving input to life care planners and other experts.

Record integrity review

Spotting gaps, late entries, contradictions, altered or missing documentation, and policy deviations.

Deposition outlines and medical questions for nurse and fact witnesses, witness preparation alongside the attorney, and help preparing for opposing experts.

Focus groups and mock trials

Organizing and helping run focus groups, where community members react to the facts of the case, and mock trials that test how the case may land with a jury.

Clinical focus

When the case lives in the ICU

High-acuity care leaves a dense, technical record. Cases involving ECMO circuits, post-op cardiac surgery, vasoactive drips and rapid deterioration need a reviewer who has worked that bedside.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is a legal nurse consultant?

A legal nurse consultant (LNC) is a registered nurse who uses clinical expertise to evaluate, analyze and give informed opinions on the delivery of healthcare and its outcomes for attorneys and other legal and insurance professionals.

Is a legal nurse consultant the same as a nurse expert witness?

No. Many LNCs work behind the scenes as consultants who review records and help the legal team understand the medicine. A nurse expert witness is retained to form opinions on the standard of care and may write a report and testify. Some nurses do both, but the roles are separate.

Do you work for plaintiffs or defendants?

Both. The analysis is the same either way: what does the record show, and did the nursing care meet the standard.

What kinds of cases do you review?

Cases involving critical care nursing, especially ECMO, CVICU, cardiac surgery, mechanical circulatory support and other ICU care.

Is this legal advice?

No. Legal nurse consultants are not attorneys and do not give legal advice. All legal strategy decisions belong to the attorney.
